Morning after morning God opens my ears that I may hear, and even though I am spat at, I have remained faithful, never turning back. Today we read the third song (oracle) of the suffering servant of God (cf. Isaiah 50:4-9a). Despite the misgivings he might have had or any fear that might have come over him in the beginning, the suffering servant has finally come to own his call because of his confidence in God’s promises. The servant knows that in spite of the challenges that have come or will continue to come his way on account of his calling, he has to carry on and not give up since the lives of the weary depend on him. Because of his experiences, God is going to use him to bring God’s consolation, courage and hope to those who are mourning, the fainthearted and those who are losing hope. This servant of God will be the mouth of God to the people. But before this can happen, the servant must be open to the voice of God. He must let God whisper in his ear the very words God has sent him to relay to the people. The servant must remain open to God; he must be able to hear God speaking to him even in the midst of maltreatments, rejections, misgivings, fear, and even in the face of death. The servant knows that because God is by his side, he will emerge victorious in the end because he will be vindicated. His suffering will not be in vain. His self-sacrifice will not be in futility. The disgrace, the shame, the rejections and oppositions will all be worth it when the word of God is finally fulfilled. The suffering servant will be vindicated when the nations finally come to the knowledge of God. It is this knowledge that gives the suffering servant of God the confidence to carry on without looking back.
