In addition to every Sunday of the year, there are six other Holy Days of Obligation in the Catholic Church in the United States:
January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God*
Ascension Thursday, 40 days after Easter Sunday
August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary*
November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints*
December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
December 25, the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord.
- Whenever January 1, August 15, or November 1 (those with a * above), fall on a Saturday or Monday, the requirement to attend Mass is lifted.
- Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, is not a Holy Day of Obligation.
- The Solemnity of St. Joseph, March 19, and the Solemnity of Sts. Peter & Paul, June 29, are Holy Days of Obligation elsewhere in the world, but not in the United States.
- The Solemnities of Epiphany and Corpus Christi have been moved to Sunday in the United States.
